On November 23 in Moscow, at the Metropol Hotel, the 9th Congress of the Moscow Union of Journalists was held, dedicated to the theme “Victory in the information war depends on everyone.” The congress delegates discussed the results of work over five years and outlined plans. The main emphasis of the speakers was on the work of journalists in covering a special military operation. At the congress, it was decided that the Moscow Union of Journalists would join the Union of Journalists of Russia, and the delegates unanimously re-elected the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets Pavel Gusev as chairman of the Union of Journalists for a new five-year term.
Opening the event, the chairman of the Moscow Union of Journalists, editor-in-chief of Moskovsky Komsomolets Pavel Gusev asked the delegates to observe a minute of silence in memory of Boris Maksudov, a military correspondent for the Rossiya 24 TV channel, who was killed in an attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Zaporozhye region.
In his opening remarks, the chairman of the SJM specifically focused on the work of journalists in covering the special military operation. He emphasized the importance of the work of military officers – such as Alexander Sladkov, Evgeniy Poddubny, Alexander Kotsyuba, Roman Kosarev and many others: “Our journalists work in the most difficult conditions on the front line, they are not afraid to fulfill their professional duty and, like the soldiers, experience all the difficulties when covering events directly from the NWO zone. From them we learn about the exploits of our soldiers.” The head of the SJM testified that our military personnel in the Northern Military District treat military officers with great respect, and thanked all the journalists who report directly from the front line to convey the truth about the service of the Russian military, as well as the chief editors of publications who create all the conditions for their correspondents.
The report harshly criticized unscrupulous bloggers. It was noted that “often officials do not fully understand the difference between professional journalists and those bloggers who, being completely outside the bounds of the law, try to “pull the blanket over themselves” by creating fakes, hoaxes, and spreading lies…” Bloggers print what they neither One normal journalist would not print various unverified information. Gusev noted that professional journalists bear the greatest responsibility before society, before the law, and “some individuals” outside the framework of the law write “whatever they want” and earn millions from it; and there are only a few criminal cases. “We were supported, the Moscow Union of Journalists is now developing and preparing materials specifically in this area,” emphasized the editor-in-chief of MK, “and I hope that in the near future we will streamline this work.”
Voicing the proposal for SJM to join the Union of Journalists of Russia as a legal entity, Gusev explained this by saying that while maintaining all the powers of the Moscow organization, “we are becoming a single whole.” “Today is the time when there should be no division into any structures within Russia,” he said. “We must be together in everything: teaching journalism, training journalists, and protecting journalists.” And our word in this regard will be even stronger, even more powerful. This is the only way we will be able to solve the most difficult issues that journalism now faces.” He added that no extreme events “will hinder our movement forward.”
The Chairman of the Union of Journalists, Vladimir Solovyov, in his speech spoke about the results of the work of his organization. For his part, he also noted that the work of journalists in the Northern Military District zone is “something that our souls and hearts ache about now.” “Indeed, our colleagues are dying. We are trying to help them as much as we can,” Solovyov said, talking about the assistance fund created by the SJR to provide support to military officers and their relatives. The head of the SJR said that four branches of the organization were created in the new Russian territories and now they are “actively developing.” When Vladimir Solovyov and his colleagues were in Lugansk and Donetsk to present tickets to new members of the SJR, they even came under serious fire. Due to the creation of branches in new territories, as Solovyov said, the organization’s membership in the International Organization of Journalists was frozen.
Commenting to a MK correspondent on the joining of the SJM to the all-Russian one, the head of the SJR said: “Indeed, in our difficult times, it is better for such large journalistic organizations to unite. Such an association will provide a lot of opportunities for joint work, because the Union of Journalists of Russia has a huge number of competitions and forums, we are organizing the world’s largest journalistic forum “All Russia”, holding educational forums, a film festival, and constantly developing new formats. And members of the largest Moscow journalistic union will be more actively involved in all this, which I am very happy about. We have now become one of the world’s largest journalism organizations.”
The editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Arguments and Facts” Mikhail Chkanikov told the congress delegates about the reforms carried out in the editorial office with the beginning of the SVO: this included the reorganization of departments, including the creation of new ones – for example, a news department, and night shifts, etc. “All these actions that we are taking are aimed at making us competitive in the information war of which we feel ourselves a part,” he said. He emphasized that in order to win the information war, “it is important to be, not to appear,” and the publication follows this principle, achieving certain successes as a result. Chkanikov also emphasized that the annexation of new territories to Russia is a “huge story,” and “they should feel part of Russia, and our task is to provide them with such an opportunity, which is what we are trying to do.”
And the head of the Eurasian Bureau of the China Media Corporation, Wang Bin, emphasized in his report that “today we must together fight for the purity of the global information space, develop cooperation and take responsibility.” On behalf of Chinese journalists, he expressed confidence that “the path to the future lies through knowledge of cultures and respect for the age-old traditions of each people.”
