At the beginning of the year, an increase in the incidence of syphilis (a socially significant disease) and acute hepatitis (among them hepatitis C) was recorded in Russia. The expert attributed this to the tightening of requirements for health workers to submit data on such patients and do not exclude the influence of the military operation.

In January 2023, at least 2.6 thousand people fell ill with syphilis in Russia, which is 71% more than in the first month of 2022. The incidence of acute hepatitis increased (+45%): hepatitis A (by 1.5 times, about 300 people got sick in a month), hepatitis C (+42%, about 100 people).

In January 2023, the increase in the incidence of HIV was 20% (4.4 thousand), newly diagnosed tuberculosis – 10% (2.9 thousand), Medvestnik reports, citing Rosstat data.

Rosstat does not provide data on the number of infected by subjects. Half of all identified cases of HIV infection occurred in 13 regions: Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk and Perm regions, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Rostov, Samara, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions.

A significant part of the increase in the incidence of syphilis and hepatitis may be due to the tightening of requirements for health workers to submit data on such patients on time, and the impact of the coronavirus and the military operation cannot be ruled out, says Georgy Vikulov, Director of the Research Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Viral Infections, Head of the Herpes Center of the Moscow State University Research Center . “During hostilities, the frequency of intestinal infections increases, and we have a large number of hospitalized participants in SVO who just might have hepatitis A,” Mr. Vikulov said.
