Astrophysicists working with data from the Mount Wilson Observatory have concluded that stars comparable in age to the Sun have weaker “magnetic braking,” a phenomenon that causes a star’s magnetic field to slow down its own rotation.

Young stars slow down their rotation faster than stars that have reached the age of the Sun. Astronomers have concluded that magnetic braking becomes weaker by about 10 times.

Planets in the orbits of stars that have undergone a phase of weakening magnetic braking are more suitable for the emergence of life if other conditions are met, according to the authors of an article in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
