Astrophysicists have estimated the likelihood that a powerful magnetic storm will last for several days

The G4 magnetic storm that began in Moscow on April 23 turned out to be much more powerful than astrophysicists expected. According to the Laboratory of X-ray Astronomy of the Sun Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciencesit was assumed that it would correspond to the class G1 or G2.

Astrophysicists cannot name the exact reasons why the geomagnetic storm turned out to be very powerful. They also do not have an exact answer to the question of how long the increased geomagnetic activity will last. At the same time, it is argued that continuous magnetic storms lasting 3-4 days were observed only after the largest solar flares.

An outburst of moderate strength (M1.7) is cited as a provisional cause for the new storm.
