Assange’s latest appeal against extradition to the US will be heard in a London court

London’s High Court is preparing to begin a two-day hearing in the appeal of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, over his possible extradition to the United States. This key trial could be the final stage in the 52-year-old Australian’s legal battle on British soil.
The trial will be presided over by two judges: Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Victoria Sharp and Justice Adam Johnson. They will take into account a decision made in June 2023 by London High Court Judge Jonathan Swift, who rejected an appeal by Assange’s lawyers on all eight counts of his extradition to the US.
If Assange’s appeal is successful, his defense will have the opportunity to challenge his extradition to the United States before the British courts. Otherwise, this opportunity will be lost and they could appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in a last-ditch attempt to block his extradition.
It is unclear whether Assange will attend the hearing in person or via video link from London’s Belmarsh maximum security prison, where he has been held since 2019. For more than four years, Washington has been seeking his extradition to the United States, while Assange’s defense continues to fight against it.
