Armenian Foreign Ministry: Security Council of the country discussed withdrawal from the CSTO

The country’s Security Council discussed withdrawing from the Collective Security Treaty (CSTO), but now this is not being discussed, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Mnatsakan Safaryan said. About it informs local edition 168.am.

“Then it was decided not to take this step, to continue work, because work continues on those issues that were later discussed during the CSTO summit. As you know, we have announced it. At the moment, there is no talk of withdrawing from the CSTO,” the deputy foreign minister added.

The complication of Armenia’s relations with the CSTO became known at the end of 2022. Then the country’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan refused to sign the declaration of the CSTO Council and the draft on joint measures to provide assistance to Armenia. The prime minister explained his decision by the fact that the draft was incomplete and does not contain a political assessment of Azerbaijan’s aggressive actions in Nagorno-Karabakh. By this, Pashinyan understood the clashes on May 11 and November 14, 2021, as well as on September 13, 2022, during which Azerbaijan established control over territories with a total area of ​​140 square meters. km.

In March, Vedomosti wrotethat the Armenian side is not going to appoint its representative as the Deputy Chairman of the CSTO. According to Pashinyan, the country “will gladly take the post of Deputy Secretary General of the CSTO, if this means that the security of Armenia is increased by another factor, otherwise we will send the wrong message to our people.”

Then Pashinyan claimed that Yerevan was not going to leave the CSTO. At the same time, the Armenian authorities believe that the CSTO is reducing its presence in Armenia.
