Armenia applied to the UN Security Council with a request to convene an emergency meeting in connection with the deterioration of the humanitarian situation as a result of the forced blockade of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh. About it reported on the website of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

Permanent Representative of the Republic to the UN Mher Margaryan sent a letter to the Chairman of the Security Council. In it, he stated that the people of Nagorno-Karabakh are “on the verge of a complete humanitarian catastrophe”, which, according to him, is a crime against the indigenous people and forcing them to leave their homes.

According to him, after June 15, when Azerbaijan completely closed the Lachin corridor, the situation with a shortage of food, medicine and fuel worsened, shops began to close in the region. According to Yerevan, thousands of people are food insecure, including 30,000 children, 20,000 senior citizens and 9,000 disabled people.

The statement emphasizes that Azerbaijan’s actions violate the decisions of the International Court of Justice, according to which Baku must “take all measures to ensure the uninterrupted movement of people, vehicles and goods in both directions through the Lachin corridor.”

“Under the current circumstances, the Armenian government is seeking the intervention of the UN Security Council as the main body for ensuring global security and preventing mass crimes, including war crimes, ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and genocide,” Margaryan said.

Armenia asks to convene an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council and provide the Armenian delegation with the opportunity to participate in the meeting, the statement says.

The aggravation of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh has been dragging on since September 2020, when hostilities began in the region between the military of Armenia and Azerbaijan. As a result, a tripartite statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Hostilities have completely ceased in the conflict zone, and Russian peacekeepers have also been deployed along the line of contact and in the Lachin corridor.

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh worsened again in 2022, when the State Border Guard Service of Azerbaijan installed a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, on the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. In mid-July, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced its readiness to organize a trilateral meeting of foreign ministers in Moscow in the near future to discuss ways to implement the agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan at the highest level, including the topic of agreeing on a peace treaty.
