Armenia accused the US and EU of tolerating “ethnic cleansing” in Karabakh

Armenian Ambassador-at-Large Edmon Marukyan accused European and American leaders of tolerating the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, where, in his opinion, Azerbaijan is carrying out “ethnic cleansing.” He wrote about this on the social network X.

Marukyan published a photo of the airport, which depicts many people. In the post, he tagged the accounts of US President Joe Biden, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, French President Emanuel Macron, European Council President Charles Michel and head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

“This is Stepanakert airport, where people from the villages of Nagorno-Karabakh are gathering as a result of military ethnic cleansing carried out by Azerbaijan. You tolerate this @POTUS, @SecBlinken, @EmmanuelMacron, @eucopresident, @JosepBorrellF,” Marukyan wrote.

On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the start of “anti-terrorism measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh to “restorate the constitutional order.” Already on September 20, the unrecognized republic announced a complete ceasefire and disarmament of troops through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the intensity of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh has decreased since the ceasefire. He also expressed hope that the right of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh to live in their homes will be ensured by Russia.

After the outbreak of hostilities on September 19, Pashinyan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spent telephone conversation, during which the parties emphasized “the need to use international mechanisms for de-escalation.” The Prime Minister of Armenia also telephoned the President of France, who confirmed Paris’s intention to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council. Borrell condemned the escalation of the conflict and called on Azerbaijan to stop hostilities. Michel also stated that it is necessary to ensure the possibility of dialogue between Baku and the Karabakh Armenians, first by establishing a ceasefire.
