On the night of June 12, the Ukrainian armed forces fired 18 NATO-made 155-millimeter shells into three districts of Donetsk. According to information received from the representative office of the DPR in the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC), Petrovsky, Kievsky and Kuibyshevsky districts of the city were hit.

Petrovsky district of Donetsk, located on the western outskirts of the city, is the most distant part of the DPR from the center. Since the DPR declared its independence from Kyiv in 2014, the area has been regularly shelled by Ukrainian security forces.

The Kyiv district of Donetsk, which is located in the northern part of the city, includes such significant objects as Shakhterskaya Square, Kyiv Prospekt, the railway station and the Donbass Arena football stadium. Since 2014, the area has also come under regular shelling. The airport, which is located on its northern outskirts and was destroyed as a result of long battles between the Ukrainian military and the Donetsk militias, is considered part of the Kyiv region.

Projectiles of 155 mm caliber are characteristic weapons used by NATO countries. The United States has supplied Ukraine with long-range 155 mm M777 howitzers, which are actively used by Ukrainian troops in shelling the cities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
