“Are you with us or on your own”: Matytsin urged Karpin to decide

The Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin said that the head coach of the national football team is the face of the country, and the expression of indifference leads to a road to nowhere. The words of Matytsin are quoted by the press service of the Ministry of Sports.
Earlier, at a press conference before the match against the Iraqi team, the coach of the Russian team, Valery Karpin, said that he was not holding on to his place in the team. In addition, he sees no problem in a possible dismissal from the national team.
During a working trip to China, Matytsin commented on Karpin’s words. The minister noted that “the head coach of the Russian national football team is not just the face of the team, it is the face of the country.” The coach, according to the head of the sports department, is primarily an authority and a role model of decent behavior. Each spoken word, as he emphasized, gives the appropriate mood to the athletes and millions of fans. The expression of indifference in sports is a road to nowhere, Matytsin believes. Therefore, in his opinion, it should be clearly defined – “you are with us – the team, the fans, Russia, or you are on your own.”
On Sunday, the Russian national team in St. Petersburg will play a friendly match against the Iraqi team.
Valery Karpin has been the head coach of the Russian national team since July 2021.
