Apple may use AI from Google and OpenAI in iPhone – Kommersant

Apple is in talks with Google to use the Gemini language model in the iPhone, reports Bloomberg with reference to own sources. In parallel, Tim Cook’s company is conducting similar negotiations with OpenAI.
According to agency sources, Apple wants to obtain a license to use Gemini in order to use Google’s chatbot already in iOS 18, which will be released this year. At the same time, Apple is independently developing AI, and its own chatbot model will be included in the new version of the operating system. However, Apple’s own AI model focuses on functions that run directly on devices. Apple needs a third-party product to support cloud-based functions, such as creating images from a text description or writing texts based on simple user instructions, Bloomberg notes.
According to the agency, if negotiations between Apple and Google are successfully completed, their new partnership could be concluded on the basis of an agreement on a search service. Google has been around for over 20 years gives away Apple 36% of revenue from advertising viewed by users through the Safari Internet browser. In exchange, Apple guaranteed to Google that its search service would always be the default search engine in Safari.
The parties have not yet reached a final decision on the terms of the agreement, Bloomberg reports. The companies themselves refused to comment on this information.
As the agency notes, the new agreement between Apple and Google is unlikely to be approved by US and EU regulators. US Department of Justice back in October 2020 filed a lawsuit to the companies over their agreement to use Google’s search engine as the default service in Safari. And in the EU it came into force in February “law on the digital services market”which, among other things, obliges Google to provide users with the opportunity to choose between different search engine and browser options.
