In football, ten-minute penalties may be introduced; referees will be able to apply such a punishment for disagreement with the decisions of the referees. So far, the innovation is only being discussed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Will the rules be changed again? And does a popular sport need such innovations? Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov looked into it.
The International Council of Football Associations has existed since 1986 and is engaged in regulating the rules of the popular game. This time the organization decided to protect the referees from attacks from angry athletes who were dissatisfied with the verdicts of the men in black.
Lately, we really often see how almost the entire team rushes at the referee during a meeting if they consider his decision to be wrong. After preliminary consultations, officials will try to stop such stories and introduce a temporary removal of players for ten minutes.
Violators are put in the penalty box in hockey, which means the same is possible in football. The idea is strange, but if the IFAB has already started talking about it, then a positive decision can be made quickly, noted football referee Igor Fedotov: “Now everything is real. The board is trying to introduce something new into the game, like they did with VAR or with the decision on the number of possible substitutions during a match.”
Another question is: is such a measure necessary in football? After all, for aggressive behavior or disputes with the referee, the usual system of punishments has long been in place – yellow and red cards. Why invent something new is unclear.
Temporary deletions will only interfere, football manager Yuri Belous is sure: “There is already a clear, well-functioning system. You hooliganly express your indignation at the referee, get a yellow or red card, and the topic is closed.
Football is very conservative in nature and rarely does anything change. Even VAR causes a lot of criticism not only in Russia, but also in the UK and other countries.”
True, it is worth saying that in the lower English leagues the rule of temporary removals is already in effect, and officials note that after its introduction, arguments with referees began to be much less frequent. But one thing is amateur matches that mean nothing, and another thing is stories with stars, the transfer value of which is amazing.
Football referee Igor Fedotov believes that the new rules can add scandals and even serious injuries to the game: “During the match, the athletes are warmed up, ready to play, their adrenaline is boiling. After a forced break, the player will cool down and may get injured after entering the field.
In addition, there are ordinary players, and there are stars. And if Messi or Ronaldo starts showing unsportsmanlike behavior, will the referees send them to the bench? I’d be interested to see that.”
Officials will meet in London at the end of November to weigh the pros and cons and decide whether world football needs ten-minute penalties. And even if adequacy wins, I’m sure IFAB functionaries will not have less desire to add certain innovations. It’s not just that they constantly change the interpretation of certain established rules.
After all, the council needs to constantly prove that the organization receives annual multimillion-dollar funding from FIFA for a reason. Meanwhile, there have been no high-profile decisions from the organization for a long time, and after the revolutionary approval of the VAR system, almost nothing is heard about IFAB. Apparently, it’s time to remind ourselves.
