The vague reaction of the US State Department to the scandal with the appearance of an SS man in the Canadian Parliament looks cynical. This opinion expressed Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.
According to the diplomat, the refusal of US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller to condemn the honoring of the veteran of the SS Galicia division in the Canadian Parliament is a desecration of the memory of the millions who died during the Second World War.
Anatoly Antonov called the “incomprehensible reaction” of the United States a betrayal of the memory of ordinary American soldiers who gave their lives for the independence of their country.
The situation looks “especially cynical” against the backdrop of the US administration’s attention to human rights issues and the fight against anti-Semitism, the ambassador believes.
Antonov also noted that Washington demonstrates “inattention” when it comes to Nazism in Ukraine. There is no concern about the use of SS symbols or the erection of monuments in honor of leaders who collaborated with Hitler.
The Russian Ambassador believes that the US refusal to criticize the outrageous incident in Canada speaks of the authorities’ real attitude towards the tragic events of the 20th century.
