The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Brown said that the country will hold a referendum on secession from the power of the British monarchy and becoming a republic. A three-year period has been set for holding a popular vote.
Antigua and Barbuda is part of the British Commonwealth of Nations, which is a voluntary association. In addition to Great Britain, it includes almost all ex-colonies, dominions and protectorates. In accordance with recent events, King Charles III of Great Britain has now become the leader of the Commonwealth.
“The referendum is not a manifestation of disagreements between Antigua and Barbuda and the monarchy,” Brown said in an interview with ITV. He called the will of the people “the last step to complete the circle of independence, to become a truly sovereign country.”
When asked about the time frame for resolving the issue, Brown replied that he intended to organize a vote “within the next three years.”
Antigua and Barbuda is a state on the islands of the same name and the island of Redonda in the Lesser Antilles group (Caribbean Sea).
