Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University have discovered a unique feature of centenarians, protecting them from disease. It is reported by Nature Microbiology.
During the study, the scientists applied deep learning algorithms to analyze viral DNA from stool samples. After that, they compared the virome of young adults over 18, older people over 60, and centenarians 100 years and older. There were 195 volunteers in total.
The results showed that the gut microbiota is most diverse in centenarians. In addition, it turned out that they have a higher number of viruses in the lytic life cycle, during which pathogens are destroyed.
Also, about 25% of centenarian viruses encoded genes that support key steps in sulfate metabolism. According to experts, it is this mechanism that helps maintain the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier in old age.
