Chairman of the Russian Freedom and Justice Party Andrei Bogdanov refused to participate in the presidential elections of the Russian Federation, the Central Election Commission reported. The ex-candidate himself stated that he withdrew from the elections because he had an open foreign account.

“We accepted documents from Andrei Vladimirovich Bogdanov, he wrote a statement about the resignation, so to speak, of the powers of the presidential candidate and withdrawal from the presidential campaign,” said Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation Nikolai Bulaev. The CEC recognized Mr. Bogdanov as having lost his candidate status, and the issue was promptly included on the agenda.

Having decided to put forward his candidacy, Mr. Bogdanov, according to him, sent the relevant applications to credit institutions but did not receive confirmation, and could not go in person due to the lack of a Schengen visa. “This is not the first year I’ve been coming to the Central Election Commission, I would like to remain on good terms and not burden myself with unnecessary work that will lead nowhere,” he told reporters. He also said he has no plans to support any of the candidates. “At least no one asked me personally about this,” he said.

Mr. Bogdanov earlier passed signatures to the Central Election Commission for registration as a candidate for the presidential election.

The day before, January 30, from participation in the election race refused Chairman of the Russian People’s Union party Sergei Baburin. He submitted signatures to the Central Election Commission, but ultimately decided to support the current President Vladimir Putin. Irina Sviridova (Democratic Party of Russia) couldn’t collect required number of signatures.

The Russian presidential elections will take place from March 15 to 17. The Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation has already registered as candidates Vladimir Putin (self-nominated), Nikolai Kharitonov (Communist Party of the Russian Federation), Leonid Slutsky (LDPR), Vladislav Davankov (New People). Candidates from extra-parliamentary parties must provide the CEC with 100 thousand signatures in their support, self-nominated candidates – 300 thousand signatures. They must be submitted to the Central Election Commission by January 31 inclusive.
