Scientists from the University of Toronto in Canada have introduced a mobile application that helps improve the cognitive functions of people with dementia. writes scientific publication Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
HippoCamera is the name of the development of Canadian scientists, since the application is designed to simulate the work of the hippocampus, which is responsible for storing memory in the brain. HippoCamera also helps to encode memories in the brain more efficiently and increase the level of attentiveness – all this contributes to the reliable functioning of cognitive functions.
According to the creators, the application can play a big role for people with dementia in the early stages, as well as help people who have other types of memory impairment.
To test the effectiveness of HippoCamera, a control group of subjects recorded short 24-second videos for ten weeks, so that in the next step they would retell what happened in the previous video for eight seconds.
Subsequently, brain MRI of the subjects showed a 50% increase in memory efficiency – the participants in the experiment were twice as likely to remember events six months ago compared to patients who did not use the HippoCamera.
