An anomalously massive black hole has been discovered at the center of an old galaxy

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh using the James Webb telescope managed to find at the center of the very old galaxy GS-9209 is an extremely massive black hole. According to astronomers, it is five times more massive than it should be, given the number of stars around it.

Galaxy GS-9209 is located 25 billion light years from Earth and is one of the oldest observable galaxies. 800 million years after the Big Bang, it managed to form as many stars as now in the Milky Way, and has a mass of 40 billion solar masses. Despite this, it is ten times smaller than the Milky Way.

According to scientists, the black hole at the center of the galaxy is so massive that it stopped the formation of stars. Scientists believe that such a black hole was very active in the past and absorbed a significant amount of gas and dust, which affected the process of star formation and prevented the formation of new stars. Thanks to this discovery, scientists can confirm the theory that supermassive black holes can stop the formation of stars in the galaxy.
