An 8-year-old Bremen resident who was playing in the sandbox on the grounds of his elementary school found a silver coin that turned out to be an ancient Roman silver denarius.
The age of the artifact is estimated at more than 1800 years. Archaeologists suggest that it represents evidence of trade between the Romans and the ancient German tribe of the Hawks.
Ancient Roman coins were not found in Bremen for several decades, and in the entire history of the city, the find was the third.
