American unions threaten to expand strikes at US auto plants

United Auto Workers (UAW) warned, which will announce on September 22 that it will expand the strike to more auto plants if significant progress has not been made in negotiations with Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Stellantis on new labor contracts by then. UAW chief Shawn Fain said, “We’re not going to sit around and wait forever while they stall.”
Ford, GM and Stellantis account for 40% of the US auto market. For a month, the UAW tried to get companies to improve pay conditions for workers. The companies offered workers a 20% wage increase over four and a half years. The UAW, for its part, demanded a 40% increase, but during negotiations reduced the request to 36%.
Because the results of the negotiations did not satisfy workers, the UAW went on strike last week at three plants: Ford Motor in Michigan, GM in Ohio and Stellantis in Missouri. According to Reuters, 12,700 workers are currently taking part in the strike. If the protest expands to other factories of these manufacturers, the number of strikers will increase significantly. Negotiations are ongoing.
