U.S. police make blunders using Clearview’s 30 billion faces illegally harvested from social media

The American company Clearview has collected about 30 billion photos of users’ faces on social networks. Most of them were taken illegally. The company has already been fined in Europe and Australia for this, but it continues to actively cooperate with the police.

The police told the publication AiNewsthat facial recognition software is only used to investigate serious or violent crimes. However, the Miami Police have confirmed that they are using Clearview AI software for all types of crime.

Assistant Police Chief Armando Aguilar said his team uses facial recognition about 450 times a year and has been able to solve several murders with it.

However, there are many documented cases of errors. ACLU senior legislative adviser Kate Ruan emphasized that the dangers of using technology are very real, this has already been proven. The expert noted that the level of inaccuracy was alarming.

In addition, the police do not admit in which cases they used the facial recognition system. Therefore, the numbers of wrongful arrests may be much higher than those already known.

Clearview representatives claim that their program works flawlessly, and only the police are to blame for violations of the law.
