American absurdity: the Bible was confiscated from schools due to “obscene” content

Utah parents have won a ban on Bible study in some American schools, and for a very surprising reason. The sacred book was declared too “obscene”.

Utah is a conservative state, and a law passed last year made it easier to remove “pornographic or obscene” content from schools. But one parent apparently thought it was too big a step forward, says Sky News.

The parent, angered by a wave of book bans across the US, has retaliated in some way by banning the Bible from some Utah schools.

The Davis School District, which has nearly 74,000 children, has largely retired the sacred book but has retained it in high school libraries.

In a copy of the parent’s complaint seen by NBC News, they said their attempt to ban the Bible was a protest against a 2022 state law that made it easier to remove “pornographic or obscene” content from Utah schools.

This parent claims, “I thank the Utah Legislature and Utah Parents United (a conservative activist group that supports the law) for making this unfair process so much easier and more efficient. Now we can all ban books and you don’t even need them.” read or be accurate about it. Hell, you don’t even have to watch the book!”

The parent, whose name has been redacted in the complaint, submitted eight pages of “unacceptable” material from the Bible, including examples of incest, prostitution, rape, genital mutilation, bestiality and infanticide, Sky News notes.

The initiator of this strange action described the Bible as “one of the sexiest books in the world” and concluded that, according to the new law, it “has no serious value for minors, because, by our new definition, it is pornographic.”

The absurd news comes as conservative activists have turned their attention to schools across the US to influence what children are taught about sensitive issues, Sky News notes.

The American Library Association has warned that efforts to ban or restrict book distribution are gaining momentum, with group director Deborah Caldwell-Stone saying: education”.

District spokesman Chris Williams said the committee had made the decision to “retain the book in school library circulation at the high school level only, based on age-appropriateness for vulgarity or violence.”

Chris Williams said he believes only seven or eight libraries in the district’s elementary and junior high schools have Bibles on their shelves and are not part of the school curriculum.

According to him, book review is carried out by teachers, parents and administrators.

As Sky News recalls, Utah is a largely conservative state where 50 to 60% of the population is Mormon, a religious group that reads the Bible along with other sacred texts such as the Book of Mormon, which has not been challenged in the Davis School District.
