Amazon invests $15 billion in Japan to develop its cloud and AI business

Today, January 19, Amazon’s cloud division – Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on investments of 2.26 trillion yen ($15 billion) in Japan to expand its cloud operations there and develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The investment will run until 2027 and will be made in Amazon facilities in Tokyo and Osaka “to meet growing consumer demand.”

Between 2011 and 2022, AWS will already invested 1.51 trillion yen (about $10 billion) to expand its cloud and AI capabilities in Japan. The company now provides its AI services to large Japanese corporations such as Asahi Group, Marubeni and Nomura Holdings.
