Today, September 12, the American corporation Amazon announced about its participation in the STRATOS project to directly capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (direct air capture – DAC), which should become the largest such project in the world. It is expected that the STRATOS installations will start operating in 2025 and reach full capacity by 2035.

Amazon’s participation will consist of purchasing carbon dioxide, the increased content of which causes the greenhouse effect and, according to many scientists, is the cause of global warming. Gas will be purchased from the project operator, 1PointFive, in the amount of about 250 thousand tons. This is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 55.6 thousand gasoline-powered cars. After capturing CO2 from the atmosphere, it is stored in special underground tanks and then used in the chemical industry, construction materials production, etc.

Participation in the project to directly capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere with its subsequent storage and processing is a first for Amazon. The company does not disclose the exact investment volumes. However, according to experts cited by the TV channel CNBCMicrosoft, which previously announced its participation in a similar Heirloom Carbon project and the purchase of 315 thousand tons of carbon dioxide, will spend about $200 million on this.
