Almost 1800 northerners took part in the May relay race. Today, May 7, the 77th May track and field relay race took place in Arkhangelsk. This year, the traditional May race, beloved by northerners, is dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The route of the May relay race is traditional and familiar to all generations of Arkhangelsk residents: from Trade Union Square, athletes run along the Severnaya Dvina embankment to Karl Marx Street and then return back along Troitsky Prospekt. There are 11 stages in total, the total length is 4566 meters.
The children’s relay race ran from the Europark shopping center to Trade Union Square and included six stages with a total length of 360 meters.
“I am glad to note that the most active participants in the May relay race, dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the Great Victory, were kindergartens and schools in the capital of Pomorye,” said Vice Governor Sergei Pivkov. – In total, 194 teams of athletes of different ages took part, including 42 teams of schoolchildren and 70 teams of kindergartens. Kindergartens this year fielded six teams more than the year before.
According to the chief referee of the competition Mikhail Shulgin, the competition in all age groups was high. But he especially noted the incredible rivalry between the teams of kindergartens, where the fate of gold medals was decided by a split second.
For the most high-quality and efficient refereeing, a 360-meter signal cable was laid, thanks to which the referee team received the most accurate results in real time, the Ministry of Sports of the Arkhangelsk Region reports.
