The Latvian national team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ice Hockey World Championship, beating the Swiss national team in overtime with a score of 4:3. The match took place in Riga on the evening of May 23.
In the Latvian national team, goals were scored by Ralfs Freibergs (22nd minute), Rodrigo Abols (27th), Kaspars Daugavins (55th) and Rudolfs Balcers (63rd). The Swiss national team includes Kevin Fiala (27th), Marco Miranda (48th) and Andres Ambuhl (54th). At the end of the game, Latvia finished third in Group B, becoming the last country to advance to the quarter-finals of the championship.

The quarter-final matches will be held tomorrow, May 25. Teams will play in the following pairs:
- USA – Czech Republic,
- Switzerland – Germany,
- Sweden – Latvia,
- Canada – Finland.
The semi-final matches will be held on May 27, for the third place – on May 28, for the first – also on May 28.
The 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship was to be held in St. Petersburg. In April 2022, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) moved the tournament to Latvia and Finland due to the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. The national teams of Russia and Belarus are also forced to miss the tournament due to IIHF sanctions.
