Azerbaijani troops entered the city of Lachin in Nagorno-Karabakh, informed President of the Republic Ilham Aliyev on Twitter.
“Today, on August 26, we, Azerbaijanis, returned to the city of Lachin. The Azerbaijani army is stationed in the city. The villages of Zabukh and Sus have been taken under control,” he said.
On August 3, in the region of the Lachin corridor (connecting the territory of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic with Armenia), armed clashes between the armed forces of Azerbaijan and the NKR took place, ending with the occupation by Azerbaijani troops of a number of heights that allow fire control of the Lachin corridor highway.
After that, Azerbaijan demanded organize movement from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh along an alternative route instead of the Lachin corridor, which is under the protection of Russian peacekeepers.
The need to create a new route is one of the points of the tripartite agreement with Moscow and Yerevan dated November 9, 2020. At the same time, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the transfer of several settlements to Azerbaijan at the end of June, informed Interfax.
