Niger accepted Algeria’s initiative for a peaceful political settlement of the crisis in the country. This is stated in a statement by the Algerian Foreign Ministry published on X (formerly Twitter).
“The Algerian government, through the Niger Foreign Ministry, has received notification of the acceptance of the Algerian initiative for a political settlement of the crisis in Niger as part of the settlement plan presented by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” the Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It is emphasized that Niger’s decision opens up the possibility of fulfilling the conditions for overcoming the crisis peacefully. In this regard, Tebboune instructed Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to visit Niamey “as soon as possible” to prepare a discussion of the Algerian initiative with all interested parties.
In August Tebboune offered initiative to resolve the crisis in Niger, stressing that priority must be given to a political solution that excludes the use of force. The plan consists of six points, which include a transition period of six months “under the supervision of a civil authority headed by a consensus figure.” Algerian authorities also advocated a return to constitutional order in Niger and the restoration of power to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The military coup in Niger took place on July 27. President Mohamed Bazoum was removed, and the leader of the rebellion, the head of the presidential guard, Abdurrahman Tchiani, became the new leader. On August 10, he signed a decree creating a new government, which included 21 ministers.
