The President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexander Sergeev, may have decided to withdraw his candidacy from the elections for a new term literally on the eve of the General Meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This was reported to MK by a source at the Academy of Sciences on Sunday.
As the colleagues of the current President of the Russian Academy of Sciences say, until yesterday, Alexander Mikhailovich was full of confidence to go in his pre-election struggle against his competitors – Gennady Krasnikov and Dmitry Markovich – to the end. He tirelessly gave interviews, visited the departments of the Academy. But around noon on Sunday, according to unofficial sources, Sergeyev unexpectedly decided to withdraw his candidacy from the election.
After that, almost immediately, he stopped answering phone calls not only from journalists, but also from his colleagues.
