The Alaskan authorities did not allow diplomats from Russia to visit the Fort Richardson military memorial cemetery, where the graves of Soviet servicemen who died during the Great Patriotic War are located.
Nadezhda Shumova, head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in the United States, told TASS on Sunday.
“Unfortunately, the local American authorities did not allow embassy diplomats to visit the national cemetery without explanation,” Shumova said.
According to her, the diplomats wanted to “bend the knee before the graves of Soviet pilots and sailors who died in Alaska in 1942-1945.”
Shumova also noted that the US State Department did not respond to the diplomatic note of the embassy asking for permission to visit the cemetery.
Fort Richardson National Cemetery is located near the city of Anchorage on the territory of a US military base. To visit it, you must have a special permit.
9 Soviet pilots are buried in the cemetery, as well as two military personnel and two civilians who died while transporting aircraft from the USA to the USSR as part of the Lend-Lease program.
