Air leaks from the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) have doubled. Joel Montalbano, NASA program manager on the ISS, spoke about this on Wednesday, February 28.
According to an American expert, the leak increased about a week before the last launch of Progress and its docking with the station – the air in the transition chamber of the Zvezda module began to leak twice as fast.
Montalbano assured that the American side is cooperating with Russian colleagues on the next steps. He also stressed that at the moment there are no concerns for the safety of the crew due to an air leak.
Roscosmos, in turn, confirmed that experts are detecting an air leak on board the ISS, but emphasized that nothing threatens the crew and the station.
Despite the geopolitical situation and tense US-Russian relations, Moscow and Washington continue to cooperate in the field of space exploration. In July 2023, when NASA lost contact with the ISS after a power outage, Russian systems were made available to the Americans.
Meanwhile, in the Russian Federation they are discussing whether cosmonauts Anna Kikina and Andrei Fedyaev will receive the title of Hero of Russia. Cosmonautics historian Alexander Zheleznyakov recalled that they flew to the ISS on the American ship Crew Dragon, and also stated that in Russia flights on Soyuz are valued higher than on other ships.
