Samsung’s first smartphone with artificial intelligence has caused a stir among buyers in Western Europe. Demand for the Galaxy S24 in EU countries increased by 28% compared to the previous generation. Data from the first weeks of sales of the gadget are provided by the international analytical company Counterpoint Research. There is also increased interest in the new device in Asia. For example, in South Korea, sales of Samsung smartphones grew by 22% year on year.

The new devices have several functions with artificial intelligence, but the high demand for the Galaxy S24 may not be related to this, says IT expert, MTS RED specialist Alexander Baulin: “In 2020, COVID-19 hit, and people were buying electronics there, including smartphones. In particular, we purchased a Samsung S21, which was already very good in terms of photos, functions, and speed. We missed 2022-2023; people, in conditions of uncertainty, did not want to spend money on electronics. Finally, now they have decided that it is time to update it.

That is, relatively speaking, maybe the cycle has simply desynchronized for many buyers due to the pandemic, and now everyone has gone for the top model.

And so, of course, the Galaxy S24 neatly combines all the most interesting AI functions: image and speech recognition, translation into text and translation into another language. In principle, they were available before, but thanks to different applications that might not be available in some region.”

In Russia, sales of the new Galaxy began in January at a price of 90 thousand rubles. The most expensive model, S24 Ultra, now costs about 190 thousand. As RBC wrote with reference to retailers, the demand for the new product from Samsung was already high at the pre-order stage. Compared to the previous generation, interest has increased one and a half times. However, in the long term, Galaxy with AI is unlikely to become the sales leader even among devices in the high price category, says Denis Kuskov, CEO of the analytical agency TelecomDaily:

“This is the premium segment, and it always has the smallest share in units. Considering the current situation and the cost of the device, it is not yet possible to say that it will achieve any indicators that were, say, the Galaxy of previous generations in 2019-2020.

In fact, the premium segment in Russia is now essentially limited by the presence of Samsung and Apple. The situation always turns out to be phenomenal: in the current period, the current model is popular with the South Korean company, and the current and two previous ones are popular with the American company. It’s a rare case in the market when even now people buy models from previous years, and they are all premium segment.

So, I think that in the totality of the confrontation between Apple and Samsung smartphones in the upper price segment, for example, from 70 thousand rubles. and higher, the first corporation will still be the leader.”

Functions related to the use of AI will become a mandatory attribute of smartphones of all popular brands, believes Kommersant FM hi-tech columnist Alexander Levi. Moreover, device manufacturers, including Samsung, may well make new options available not only for the latest generations of gadgets: “Conversation, correspondence, photographs – this is what we use a smartphone for. And we see that Galaxy has something to offer users. AI in this regard is much more attractive than just a battery, a new processor or a display.

If it can be rolled out using a software update on previous devices, previous versions, then this will be an even better solution. That is, no one forbids you to buy a new smartphone, but the fact that you can try these functions on your current device, which is a year or two old, is super cool. I think that, in principle, this could be implemented for some previous generations of gadgets, and one of the manufacturers will try to do it.”

At the end of 2023, Samsung lost its leadership in the volume of smartphones shipped on the global market for the first time in 12 years. The South Korean company was displaced from the first place in the list by Apple Corporation.
