Alexander Agafonov, one of the developers of COVID-19 diagnostic methods, has been appointed acting director general of the Vector State Scientific Center (SSC) of Virology. Previously, Rinat Maksyutov held the post of head of Vector for seven years, but on May 16 he was relieved of his post due to a loss of confidence.
The appointment of Mr. Agafonov as Acting General Director of the Vector Center was confirmed TASS in the press service of the State Scientific Center. On the website of the center, personnel changes have occurred so far not reflected.
Prior to his appointment as head of the State Scientific Center, Alexander Agafonov worked as Deputy General Director of Vector and oversaw scientific work.
About layoffs Rinat Maksyutov from the post of head of Vector became known on May 17. The day before, the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, signed the corresponding order. As grounds for the dismissal of a scientist, the order indicates “failure to take measures to resolve and prevent conflicts of interest” and “loss of confidence”
SSC “Vector” (part of Rospotrebnadzor) was founded in 1974 and is located in the science city of Koltsovo near Novosibirsk. The Center is one of the largest research and production complexes in Russia, conducting fundamental research in the field of natural sciences. Vector has a unique collection of cultures of microorganisms, in particular, it is one of the two places in the world where the smallpox virus is stored. Vector was developing a vaccine against the new coronavirus infection EpiVacCorona, Ebola fever, and a test system for diagnosing HIV.
