The awakening of arthropods is a sign that there should be no more frost. Urticaria and lemongrass butterflies were among the first lepidopterans to fly out into the fresh air. They can be found in early spring, even when there is still snow on the ground. The fact is that these butterflies do not necessarily need fragrant flowers. They can feed on tree sap, which is abundant at this time. Moreover, desirable delicacies for urticaria and lemongrass are… fresh manure and dirty water from puddles, enriched with many microelements.
Ants and flies also drink tree sap with great pleasure, and coleopteran insects such as ground beetles do not disdain carrion.
The appearance of arthropods in nature depends on their food supply. As certain plants bloom, butterflies and other pollinating insects become more abundant. This means that predators will soon appear that hunt them: spiders and mantises. In addition, all insects can become prey for the animals that feed on them: birds, hedgehogs, shrews.
Meanwhile, experts report that frogs, toads and newts have emerged from suspended animation in nature. They were spotted near water bodies near Moscow. When the water temperature warms up to at least 16 degrees, the mating season will begin for frogs and toads. Environmentalists suggest that thanks to warming, amphibians will plunge into family chores earlier than expected.
