After joining NATO, Sweden may send its battalion to Latvia
Sweden plans to send a battalion to Latvia as part of NATO battle groups, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds said, citing promises from Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Sprudes expressed satisfaction with the decision, which “will be an important contribution to strengthening regional security and defense” of the Baltic country.
The multinational battle group in Latvia is led by Canada. The group consists of over 1,700 military personnel from 11 countries.
In accordance with the decisions taken at the NATO summit in Madrid, Riga and Ottawa signed a declaration on expanding the alliance’s Enhanced Presence Battle Group to the brigade level.
Sweden applied for membership in the bloc along with Finland after the start of the SVO in Ukraine. Finland joined the alliance in April 2023.
The Turkish parliament is expected to vote on Sweden’s admission to NATO in mid-January.
