New regional defense plans will allow NATO to deploy 300,000 troops in the first month in the event of a potential attack. This was stated in Norway by the head of the NATO military committee, Admiral Rob Bauer. He arrived in Oslo to participate in the annual conference of the Chief of General Staff of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Bauer deciphered the alliance’s defense plans approved at the July NATO summit in Vilnius. According to him, they provide for the further strengthening of contingents at the Russian borders and possible scenarios for the development of events in the event of a military confrontation with the Russian Federation.
“If we talk about collective defense, then we will not have the opportunity to prepare for an attack that is already happening… We must be prepared. Therefore, more troops are needed at a high level of readiness, and this is not something that can be done overnight. They will need weapons, ammunition, training and the rest… Therefore, we call the figure 300 thousand military at a high level of readiness,” Bauer explained.
He emphasized that the use of 300 thousand military personnel in the first 30 days is stipulated. In the future, a larger number of soldiers and officers may be used. Taking into account Finland, which recently joined the alliance, and Sweden, which intends to join NATO, we are talking about three and a half million military personnel.
It is also planned that in the coming years, NATO countries will increase the size of their armed forces, as well as intensify their defense industry. It is assumed that alliance members will allocate at least 2% of GDP to defense.
