Academicians called the election of the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences a farce

AT “Club July 1” characterized the election of the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences as a vote “de facto turned into a farce, participation in which would be humiliating.”
The informal association announced that the candidates who took the first two places in the elections five years ago will not participate in the new elections due to “insulting” interference of administrative bodies in the elections for members of the academy.
Previously it was reported that head of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev withdraws his candidacy for a second term. He called the decision forced.
The candidacy of Academician Robert Nigmatulin, who came second in the 2017 elections, was not approved by the Russian government. The media suggested that the reason was the age of the academician – he is 82 years old.
Gennady Krasnikov, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Nanotechnologies and Information Technologies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Dmitry Markovich, Director of the Institute of Thermal Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, are contending for the post of President of the Academy.
A secret ballot is scheduled for September 20.
