Russian astronomer and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail Marov has died. He stood at the origins of the Soviet program for the study of the Moon and planets of the solar system. Lev Zeleny, scientific director of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported to RIA Novosti about his death.
According to the head of the Institute, Mikhail Marov had been ill recently, but recently celebrated his anniversary and, despite feeling unwell, “did excellent one-and-a-half-hour reports.”
Mikhail Marov graduated from Moscow State Technical University. N. E. Bauman. In the late 50s and early 60s, in Korolev he was involved in the development of navigation systems for the first interplanetary spacecraft under the leadership of Boris Rauschenbach.
From 1967 to 2008, he headed the department of applied mechanics, planetary research and aeronomy at the Mstislav Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics. Since 2008, he became the head of the planetary research department at the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry named after. V. I. Vernadsky (GEOKHI) RAS.
Mikhail Marov taught at the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the International Space University in Strasbourg (France).
