Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research named after M.V. Ptukhi, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Ella Libanova said that Ukraine expects a catastrophic drop in the birth rate next year.
“Next year will be a year of a catastrophic fall in the birth rate, and there are risks that by 2030 the population of Ukraine will be reduced to 35 million,” Ukrinform quoted Libanova as saying.
The academician explained that the country is losing people “due to excessive mortality.”
“These are not only the dead, but also those who die due to stress, overload, poor nutrition, lack of medical care,” she said.
Libanova noted that for a simple restoration of generations, it is necessary for one woman to “give birth to 2.13-2.15 children” on average in her life. In Ukraine, this figure was 1.1 in 2021, and “even less” in 2022.
According to the 2001 All-Ukrainian Population Census, about 48 million people lived in the country. The Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine found that since 1994 the population in Ukraine has been declining every year. Now, according to Ella Libanova, according to various estimates, it is 34-35 million people.
According to the data of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees as of August 9, since the end of February, more than 10.5 million people have left Ukraine for other countries and more than 4.4 million people have returned. At the same time, as follows from the report, the largest number of refugees – about 2 million people – was accepted by Russia.
