Citizen Lab discovered a vulnerability on the Apple device of an employee of a Washington public organization. The vulnerability was used to infect the device with the Pegasus spyware of the Israeli company NSO Group, reports Reuters.

iPhone smartphones with the latest version of the iOS operating system (16.6) were affected. The latest update fixes the problem. Citizen Lab has discovered a “zero-click exploit,” a type of malware that allows programs to be launched without the user’s knowledge. The company “with a high degree of confidence” attributes this exploit to Pegasus.

Citizen Lab believes that the attacker made a mistake that allowed them to find the vulnerability. Apple told researchers that such attacks can be blocked by the Lockdown Mode feature.

In 2021, a number of media outlets published an investigation into how Pegasus spyware from the Israeli company NSO Group was used to spy on journalists, civil activists, human rights activists and officials around the world. Among those who were subjected to surveillance were former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French President Emmanuel Macron and many others.
