People are afraid to stay in border areas

The road in the Lachin corridor is deserted. More than 100 thousand residents of Nagorno-Karabakh have already moved to Armenia. All week people were stuck in 30-hour traffic jams in the Lachin corridor, trying to leave the republic. Last night the last buses carrying refugees left Stepanakert. Volunteers from all over the country help those who make it to Armenia to settle in their new place. One of them told Moskovsky Komsomolets about what is happening now in the region.

A volunteer named Vrezh helps displaced people from Artsakh as a driver. Every day he gets behind the wheel of his minivan and drives a long distance to the Armenian border town of Goris. He brings humanitarian aid, water and food, warm clothes there, and on the way back he takes with him people from Karabakh, whom he transports to other Armenian cities. But he cares not only about people, but also about his little brothers. From Goris he took dogs rescued from Artsakh, because you cannot stay with animals at the distribution point. Now the task is to find new families for our four-legged friends. But it’s difficult to do this, because even people now don’t have enough houses.

“People are being distributed to the regions closest to the border, since housing is very expensive in Yerevan and the surrounding area and there are no places where people can be received,” the man told MK. “Since 2020, a lot of refugees have arrived from Karabakh. They settled closer to the center of the country because they are afraid to live in the border areas of Syunik or Zangezur. People are given houses there, but they simply don’t want to go there, preferring to stay in the distribution centers. (Azerbaijan also has plans for Syunik and Zangezur; these areas are needed to build a transport corridor to Azerbaijani Nakhichevan – author)

— What kind of humanitarian aid do people mainly bring to Goris and Kornidzor?

And water, and bread, and blankets, and much more. Yesterday we brought thick down jackets. All of Armenia helps, all those who care. Russians also help, both physically and with money transfers. Now there are many Russians living in Armenia who have been with us from day one. People arrived in Goris very tired. They got there as best they could. In the backs and cabs of trucks, sitting directly on things. If you sit a little on top of each other, then seven people can fit into the car, but it also happened that there were thirty people crammed into each other. And in this state they spent up to forty hours

In Goris, we help people deal with their old cars on the spot. For example, large trucks were brought there to remove old cars that are no longer able to move. From Stepanakert to Yerevan it is more than 200 kilometers. A lot of cars get damaged on the road, and people need to be taken out.
