Virologist Nikolai Kryuchkov assessed the possibility of the deadly Indian Nipah virus appearing in Russia. According to him, this is a very dangerous infection, but the risks are still minimal, writes REN TV.

Kryuchkov noted that Nipah causes inflammation of the central nervous system and encephalitis, inflammation of the brain with serious consequences. According to him, the virus is mutating, there is a suspicion that in theory it could become pandemic. However, no one is talking about the epidemic yet; there are only local outbreaks.

“In general, the incidence is low compared to other viral infections, but outbreaks are already happening,” the expert said.

He explained that the infection is tied to sources, to certain species of bats that do not exist in Russia. He advised tourists not to visit areas where outbreaks of the disease have occurred, wash fruits thoroughly (bats can feed on them) and wear masks.
