A vessel from the Russian Federation with fertilizers detained in Finland was allowed to leave the country

The Russian dry cargo ship Smew with a batch of fertilizers received permission from the Finnish Foreign Ministry to leave the country, informed Yle with reference to the Finnish Foreign Office.
They stressed that the permit was issued because the ship was transiting to a third country, and the cargo itself is necessary to help ensure food security. At the same time, the permit contains “special conditions” that the buyer of the fertilizer cargo must comply with. After they are observed, the ship can leave the port.
About the detention of this ship in the Finnish port of Kotka became known yesterday, March 22. In this port, for the first time, cargo was detained due to European restrictions. The market value of the ship’s cargo was estimated at 10-12 million euros.
The Department of Sanctions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland suggested that some of the fertilizers transported on a cargo ship are related to a Russian individual who is under sanctions.
20 February Albanian National Police delayed a Liberian-flagged tanker on suspicion of transporting oil from Russia to Albania in circumvention of EU and US sanctions. It was clarified that the operation was developed on the basis of police intelligence data. According to preliminary information, the detained vessel was transporting a batch of oil from those countries that are subject to the embargo, “namely from Russia.” It was alleged that the tanker left Azerbaijan and was then loaded in the Greek port of Kalamata with oil from another vessel.
The national police added that the necessary documents for oil were not provided. In this regard, the police seized the shipping documentation, and 22 crew members were detained for investigation.
