A unique work on glaucoma has been published in Russia

One person in the world goes blind every minute from this disease.

A unique publication has been published in Russia, which has absorbed the work of about two hundred ophthalmologists and researchers who deal with one of the most acute problems of modern medicine – glaucoma. The National Manual “Primary Open Angle Glaucoma” edited by two leading experts in this field – Professor Evgeny Alekseevich Egorov and Professor Alexander Vladimirovich Kuroyedov – is the work of 61 co-authors and 146 more specialists, contained in 1032 pages of printed text (or 964 pages of the electronic version). It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this publication: now all Russian ophthalmologists will be able to find answers to most of the questions that have arisen, arise and will arise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with glaucoma. She, as you know, only officially suffers from at least 1.3 million Russians, and about the same number do not know about her.

Glaucoma, which is called the “silent thief of vision”, has today become one of the most important pathologies in ophthalmology: this disease causes the greatest amount of visual disability. The main risk group for primary open-angle glaucoma is formed by people over 60 years old, but it happens that its congenital form is detected even in infants. Every minute in the world, one person goes blind from glaucoma, and every ten minutes, one child. “At the age of 40, glaucoma is diagnosed in 1 out of a thousand people, at the age of 60 – in 6-7 people, and over 80 years old – already in 17-25,” says the head of the ophthalmological center of the Central Military Clinical Hospital. It is difficult for an ordinary doctor to navigate in a large flow of information and learn about new achievements in science – the new National Guidelines, on which the authors worked for two years, will help them with this.

“The continuing difficulties of timely detection of glaucoma at the initial stage, the progression of the disease taking into account the course, the huge number of patients with a heterogeneous clinical structure of the disease and the large-scale social burden dictate the need to develop a more focused, logical, systematic and structured approach to the treatment of such patients. The guidelines emphasize the particular importance of basic and applied research aimed at maintaining visual function in patients with glaucoma. At the present stage, the introduction of an effective model for the organization of dispensary observation, the preparation of organizational and methodological support and the rehabilitation of patients with this pathology are of particular importance, ”the preface to the publication says.

The national domestic monograph presents all the main basic and latest areas of diagnosis and treatment used in modern glaucomatology. In 20 chapters, all aspects are reflected – from the history of glaucomatology to the analysis of various conditions that often accompany glaucoma (for example, the course of glaucoma in diabetes mellitus or glaucoma and cataracts in one eye). For the first time, the book includes in sufficient volume works on clinical epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, manifestations of the disease in different patients, diagnosis and dynamic observation, various methods of treatment, adherence to treatment in patients, organization of medical examinations, etc. The main audience of the book will be ophthalmologists, clinical residents, graduate students and students of medical universities.

“Over the past decade, scientific knowledge about glaucoma has changed enough: new data have been obtained on the pathogenesis of the disease and its manifestations; effective methods of diagnostics, monitoring and treatment have been developed and optimized. The use of laser and surgical treatment methods has significantly expanded. This guide contains the most important, useful and interesting works on various aspects of glaucoma that have been published in our country over the past 10 years. Including publications from specialized professional journals “Clinical Ophthalmology”, “National Journal of Glaucoma” and others. They contain both fundamental knowledge and clinical aspects of treatment tactics,” says Professor Egorov. — We assume that this serious scientific work, created under the auspices of the Russian Glaucoma Society and with the participation of several dozen leading glaucomatologists of our country, will be a worthy expansion of our and your knowledge in the field of studying the problems of glaucoma and comorbidity. No one has ever published a manual in such a volume – the next 5, and rather 10 years, this book will be relevant.

… On the basis of the publication, the Russian Geographical Society created a cycle of free continuous medical education: for two years, 12 professors gave lectures that were attended by more than 700 ophthalmologists. In addition, a program has been prepared for colleagues from the CIS countries. The work on the book also gave rise to many undertakings, including scientific research (for example, a study on the problem of terminal glaucoma will end on May 15).
