As reported on the portal of the Laboratory of Solar X-ray Astronomy of the Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FIAN), a very strong flare was recorded on the Sun on Monday. Scientists classified this flare as X1.9 and lasted exactly 20 minutes.
It is noted that this is the 15th outbreak on January 9. On Monday, 11 weak class C flares and three medium class M flares were recorded.
A solar flare is an explosive process of energy release (kinetic, light and thermal) in the atmosphere of the Sun. The energy output of a powerful solar flare can reach 6×1025 joules, which is about 1⁄6 of the energy released by the Sun per second, or 160 billion megatons of TNT, which, for comparison, is the approximate amount of world electricity consumption over 1 million years.
