A Spanish fan who was walking to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was released in Iran.
Iranian authorities have released fan Santiago Sanchez, who wanted to attend the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which ended long ago in Qatar.
Iran International TV channel reported in October 2022 that a Spanish football fan was arrested in the Iranian city of Sekkez. The fan wanted to walk to Qatar for the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Contact with him was severed on October 2 of that year, when Sanchez was in Iran.
The Iranian Embassy was “pleased” to announce the release of Santiago Sanchez, “the only Spanish citizen in custody.” The diplomatic department emphasized that the Spaniard’s release was carried out within the framework of “friendly and historical” relations between the two countries.
As reported in Spain, the fan was arrested after visiting the grave of Mahsa Amini, who died in 2022 after being detained by morality police in Tehran.
