A seven-year-old girl was dying after swimming in the Black Sea

Vacation turned into a disaster for a family with a 7-year-old girl from Yekaterinburg. After another bath, she felt unwell and ended up in intensive care. Now she is in a coma. The relatives were told that it was rotavirus, but could it lead to such serious consequences? “MK” talked with doctors about this, and also found out how things are with the “intestinal flu” now in the Black Sea resorts.

It is known that the parents and their daughter came to rest in Lazarevskoye on August 14th. The mother of 7-year-old Nadia (name changed – Auth.) Elena assures that after swimming in the sea, the child developed signs of rotavirus: the temperature rose, vomiting began, muscles ached.

For days they tried to cope on their own – they gave the girl absorbents and a lot of drink. On Saturday, the temperature subsided, it became easier. But then Nadia began to lose consciousness, her muscles began to cramp.

In an unconscious state, she was brought to the Lazarevsky hospital. Mom mentions that they had to stand in a long line with other children who also showed signs of rotavirus.

First, Nadya was placed in a general ward and put on a drip. But the child, according to the mother, began to choke and wheeze. Bloody foam came out of his nose. The doctors explained to the mother that “this happens because of a rotavirus infection – sodium was washed out of the body due to vomiting and temperature against the background of abnormal heat.”

The girl was transferred to intensive care. She developed pulmonary and cerebral edema, she fell into a coma.

According to her mother, after the doctors pumped out 2.5 liters of fluid from Nadia’s lungs, the pulmonary edema subsided. “They brought a drug to relieve cerebral edema, then they ruled it out. The brain is suffering a lot right now. We don’t know what state she will be in when she wakes up,” the mother fears of long-term consequences.

The girl’s condition is said to be critical.

“Specialists in disaster medicine and pediatric resuscitators who arrived from Yekaterinburg in the Krasnodar Territory are consulting on child treatment protocols with doctors from the regional children’s hospital,” commented “MK” on the current situation at the Ministry of Health of the Sverdlovsk Region, where the family lives.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health of the Krasnodar Territory refused to report on the child’s condition, citing “medical secrecy.”

In Krasnodar chats, information began to spread that the symptoms were “very similar to meningitis.” For clarification, “MK” turned to the capital’s pediatrician.

“The child’s condition may be due to a severe course of rotavirus infection,” explained a pediatrician from Moscow, Daria Klimuk. “The severity of the course is associated with a large volume of fluid lost,” the doctors at the hospital gave my mother the same explanation, and I agree with them. When a child loses fluid, it is important to adequately replace it. It is important that the composition contains certain concentrations of salts to maintain the functioning of organs. If the salt composition was insufficient, this could additionally contribute to the violation of the salt balance in the blood and plasma (dilute it and reduce the percentage of salts in the total volume), which caused pulmonary edema. Muscle pain, cramps, headaches could also be associated with dehydration, which increased the intoxication of the body. Cough, wheezing in the lungs and foam with blood are the main symptom of pulmonary edema.

Children with chronic diseases, congenital malformations, immunodeficiencies are prone to severe rotavirus infection. Also, aggravation of the condition can be provoked by combined infections, incorrectly or untimely treatment. Conditions associated with fluid loss in children are the most dangerous, the outcomes are not always favorable, so it is important to consult a doctor when the first symptoms of the disease appear.

Now on the Black Sea, children are massively mowed down by rotavirus – local publics are full of such cases.

– My daughter is 8 years old, we rested in Lazarevsky four times, and if she caught something, it cost two days, but this time everything was much more serious! – writes Natalia. – My daughter had a temperature of 40 for five days and vomiting, flew home ahead of time and ended up in the “infectious disease” under droppers for three days. The diagnosis is rotavirus…

“We were also in the hospital two weeks ago with rotavirus, two of my children were sick,” Anastasia from the Adlerovsky district told MK. – Hospitals are overcrowded, we even lay in the corridor for the first day! 70% of the sick are visitors, the children are babies at all, they vomit, have a temperature, cry – hellish hell! You can get infected not only at sea – we had infection through food.

– In August, you can’t go to the sea with children! Intestinal infection guaranteed! It has always been like this, and the indigenous people know about it, and therefore they don’t swim in this dump,” Olga, a resident of Sochi, told us. – Children really swallow dirty sea water near the shore. The whole crowd of them is there, pissing there, diving, garbage rises from the bottom to the surface … This is an adult who knows how to swim, he will swim away to the buoys into clear water. And the children will take a sip of sea water, dig in the hot sand near the shore, and eat the pie with the same hands. Rotavirus is expanse in hot weather, and now the sea is +30. When water is heated above +26, pathogenic bacteria and viruses begin to multiply especially actively …
