Russian Vlada Mincheva beat Ukrainian Elizaveta Kotlyar in the first round of the junior Australian Open. The match ended with a score of 6:2, 6:4 in favor of the Russian. After the game they shook hands, RIA Novosti reports.
16-year-old Mincheva is ranked 21st in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings. She has six victories in tournaments under the auspices of the organization. This was her debut match at the junior Australian Open.
Ukrainian athletes have repeatedly refused to shake hands with Russian opponents. In particular, in April 2023, Ukrainian tennis player Angelina Kalinina didn’t shake hand to Russian Anna Kalinskaya after a match at the Charleston Open. In July, Ukrainian fencer Olga Kharlan refused from a handshake after a fight with Russian Anna Smirnova, which is why she was disqualified.
