In Sevastopol, a prayer service was held in honor of Saint Admiral Fyodor Ushakov and a religious procession was held with his icon, which survived the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ missile attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet, Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev said.
According to him, the ceremonial events were timed to coincide with the day of memory of the canonized Admiral Fyodor Ushakov.
“Fyodor Fedorovich is not just a symbolic figure for Sevastopol and the Black Sea Fleet, but a fateful one. A skilled tactician who did not lose a single naval battle, one of the creators of the Sevastopol port, who invested a lot of effort in the construction of hospitals, roads, barracks, providing the city with water and food, a tireless and energetic person, left an indelible mark on Russian history,” Razvozhaev wrote in his Telegram-channel.
He also recalled that the wooden frame of the icon burned down in a fire that began after the attack on the headquarters building, and the image of Fyodor Ushakov, painted on plywood, survived the fire.
In addition to the governor, Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Viktor Sokolov, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Vladimir Nemtsev and Senator Ekaterina Altabaeva took part in the thanksgiving prayer in the Vladimir Cathedral and in the procession with the icon.
The headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in the center of Sevastopol was attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on September 22.
