Scientists from the Institute of Ecology and Evolution named after A.N. Severtsov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the course of counting the Baikal seal on the Ushkany Islands, discovered an unusual specimen of an animal with a golden coat color. As noted in message Federal State Budgetary Institution “Reserved Podlemorye”, the golden seal stands out noticeably “against the background of its gray counterparts.”
“Most likely, the fur of the seal acquired such an unusual color due to iron particles that may be contained in bottom sediments or aquatic vegetation (for example, in Elodea canadensi). For example, such “red” seals are often found among bearded seals – seals that live in the subpolar seas of our country and in the seas of the Far East.
Scientific measures for registration of seals were carried out from July 24 to August 18.
